    Matthew Thornton, "Mayor of Beale Street," and the Rev. S. A. Owen, pastor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, and president of the Tennessee Baptist Association have been recent honorees on the documentary radio program, "Meet The Leader", heard on radio station WLOK Sundays at 1:30 P. M. "Meet The Leader" seeks to give recognition to outstanding leaders of our community by reviewing the high points of their lives, together with a tape recorded interview conducted by the producer of the program, WLOK's Richard Cole. The announcer is R. L. Weaver.

    At 6:30 last Wednesday evening. The Post Office Band of Memphis took the stage in Handy Park to pay tribute to two memorable characters of Beale Street. In fact, Memphis might not be known around the World today, had it not been for the early friendship of these two honored citizens, Mayor of Beale Street, Matthew Thornton, and W. C. Handy, both physically blind and 82 years old in 1955.
